Inventory of books in the Chancery of the Prior of Durham

From Durham Priory
Jump to: navigation, search

An important piece of evidence for the use of particular books in the early 15th century, specifically about the administration of Prior John Wessington who was in office when this list was made. It shows the books used by the Prior and his officials in running the Priory - these are Cartularies, registers and legal text books rather than the theological works one finds in contemporary lists of the holdings in the cloister library.

This list of books kept in the Chancery of the Prior of Durham was made by John Fishburn in 1421. There are two monks of Durham Priory active at this time called John Fishburn. The author of this list is usually identified as the elder one John Fishburn senior, who was recorded as the Priory Chancellor between 1417 and 1431 and died in 1434 Durham Liber Vitae 2007 v.3, 315-6 C.1031, rather than John Fishburn junior, who is not recorded after 1412 Durham Liber Vitae 2007 v.3, 319 C.1038
